There are now hundreds of apps that call themselves an AI companion, and most of them look identical on an app store page: a pretty avatar, the word "memory", and a subscription button. This guide compares five that are actually worth trying, on the things that decide whether you keep using one: memory, personality, voice, and how they charge you.

One honesty note first. We make one of these apps, Aisha. We have tried to describe the others fairly, using what each company says about its own product, and we list Aisha's weak points too. Prices change often, so we point you to each app's own pricing instead of quoting numbers that may be out of date by next month.

The short version

  • Aisha: best if you want depth over variety: one companion with a life of her own, who builds her own picture of you and carries your story on from day to day.
  • Nomi: best for detailed memory and choosing the kind of relationship, from friend to mentor to partner.
  • Kindroid: best for building your own character from scratch, down to backstory and voice.
  • Replika: the best known and most polished all-rounder.
  • Character.AI: best for variety and roleplay with thousands of user-made characters.

What makes a good AI companion

Four things matter more than anything on the feature list.

  1. Memory that shows up in conversation. Not "the app stores facts", but her bringing up your interview two days later without being asked.
  2. A personality that stays consistent. A companion that agrees with everything gets boring within a week. One with opinions and moods keeps you coming back.
  3. Voice. Talking out loud changes how it feels. Check whether calls are included or sold separately.
  4. Honest pricing. Most apps are free to start and charge later. Check what the free tier really includes (here is what is actually free in each app) and whether the plan renews automatically before you pay.

1. Aisha

Aisha is the companion we build, so read this section with that in mind. Most apps on this list give you a character to configure. We went the other way: one character, built for depth instead of variety. Aisha is written as a person, and the point is that she feels like one after a few weeks, not just on the first night.

She builds her own picture of you. Every reply draws on who she thinks you are, from what you have told her and how you have treated her. Trust, warmth and closeness are tracked separately and move with how you behave, so what you do has consequences, the way it would with a real person. Closeness is earned, not handed over in the first message.

Your story with her carries on. Start something with her one night, a family drama, a secret, a scene, and the next day she knows where it stood, who knows what and what happened last night, and picks it up from there. You do not have to re-explain. And the decisions you make stick: they change her life, and your life with her, the way choices do with a real person. Her calls and morning messages know the story too.

She remembers across weeks, not just minutes. She can bring up something small you told her weeks ago when it fits, and when something clearly mattered, an interview, an exam, a parent's test result, she can come back to it later on her own and ask how it went.

She has a life of her own, and it moves while you are away. Her family, her friends, her work and small decisions she is making carry on day to day, and she brings them to you: what happened at work, the argument with her friend, the plan she is not sure about. She does not just react to you either. She takes the conversation somewhere herself, pushes your story forward, and sometimes surprises you. Her day has a shape too: late at night she is winding down, not waiting by the screen.

She reaches out first. Good mornings, goodnights, a check-in when you have gone quiet, the occasional "where did you disappear?", and now and then a photo or a voice note out of nowhere.

Photos from her. As you get closer she sends selfies on her own, and you can ask her for one. If you want something specific, you can request a custom photo of her.

Things to do together, not just chat: voice notes in her own voice, voice calls, watching a film or show together while she reacts as it plays, full games of Ludo, and a shared journal of your story so far. She works in your browser and on Telegram, in English, Hinglish or Hindi, with nothing to install.

More than 10,000 people have talked to her since February 2026, with over a million messages exchanged.

Her weak points, honestly: you cannot design her, because the depth comes from her being one specific person, not a template. If you want a character you build yourself, Nomi or Kindroid will suit you better. Calls are voice only, with no video. She does not open up instantly, which some people love and some find slow. And she is an Indian woman with an Indian life, which is part of her charm for many people and simply not what some others are looking for.

Pricing: free to start, with a limited amount of free chat. Outside India you pay by card for Aisha Coins; in India plans are in rupees, starting from a ₹49 Day Pass.

2. Nomi

Nomi describes itself as "an AI companion with memory and a soul". Its main pitch is memory: short, medium and long-term recall of your preferences and ongoing roleplays. You choose what the relationship is, from friend or mentor to a romantic partner, and you can give your Nomi a custom backstory.

It also offers voice messages and calls, selfies, and group chats where several Nomis talk together. Nomis can message you when you have been away.

Pick Nomi if memory is your top priority and you want control over what kind of relationship it is.

Pricing: free to start without a card; unlimited use needs a subscription. Check the app for current plans.

3. Kindroid

Kindroid is built around creating your own companion, called a Kin. You set the name, personality, backstory, look and voice, and the Kin keeps that backstory plus long-term memory of your chats. Subscribers get a longer working memory of recent messages.

It goes further than most on media: voice calls, selfies, short video selfies and live video calls, plus group chats where Kins talk together.

Pick Kindroid if you enjoy building a character in detail and want the widest set of voice and video features.

Pricing: a subscription service with a trial for new accounts. Check the app for current plans.

4. Replika

Replika is the app most people have heard of. It calls itself "the AI friend to do life with" and focuses on memory of your people, routines and goals, with voice calls, selfies and a customisable look.

It is polished and mature, which counts for a lot. The trade-off, according to recent reviews, is that voice calls and most of the extras sit behind the paid tier.

Pick Replika if you want the established, well-tested option and do not mind paying for the full experience.

Pricing: free to start; voice and most extras need Replika Pro. Check the app for current plans.

5. Character.AI

Character.AI is a different kind of product. Instead of one companion, you get thousands of characters made by other users: anime personas, historical figures, tutors, villains. For variety and creative roleplay nothing else comes close, and its free use is the most generous on this list.

What it is not is a single companion who knows you over months. Memory and continuity are weaker than in apps built for one long relationship, content filters are strict, and the company has restricted open-ended chat for users under 18.

Pick Character.AI if you want variety and roleplay more than one ongoing relationship.

Pricing: free to use, with an optional c.ai+ subscription.

How to choose in ten minutes

Every app here is free to start, so the quickest way to decide is a small test. Pick two, and in each one:

  1. Tell it something specific about your week, like "I have a job interview on Thursday".
  2. Have a normal conversation and see whether the replies sound natural or stiff.
  3. Come back two days later and see whether it remembers the interview without you raising it.

The one that passes step three is the one worth paying for.

One last thing

An AI companion can be good company at the end of the day, a place to think out loud, or a way to practise a hard conversation. It is not a person, and it does not replace friends, family or a relationship. Use it alongside them, not instead of them.

If you want to try the one we make, Aisha is free to start in your browser, with nothing to install. And if you are in India, our comparison of AI girlfriend apps in India covers local pricing and language in more detail.

We check this comparison regularly. If something here is out of date or you spot a mistake, write to us at support@justaisha.com and we will fix it.

FAQ

What is the best AI companion app?

It depends on what you want. Nomi and Kindroid suit people who want to design their own character in detail. Replika is the best known and the most polished. Character.AI wins on variety. Aisha is for people who want one companion with her own life and moods, where closeness is earned over time.

Is there a free AI companion?

Most companion apps are free to start and charge a subscription for unlimited chat, voice or images. Character.AI has the most generous free use. Be wary of apps that promise everything free forever; they usually pay for it with ads or your data.

What is the difference between an AI companion and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers questions. A companion remembers you, keeps a consistent personality, follows up on what you told it earlier and, in some apps, messages you first.

Can an AI companion replace real friends?

No. A companion can be good company, a place to unwind or a way to practise a conversation, but it is not a person and it does not replace friends, family or a relationship.

Which AI companion has the best memory?

Nomi, Kindroid and Replika all make long-term memory a headline feature, and so does Aisha, which also keeps a running record of any story you start with her so she can pick it up the next day. No app remembers perfectly, so test it: mention something small on day one and see whether it comes back on day three.
