Character.AI is fun, and lots of people in India use it. But a lot of the people searching for an alternative here want three things it was not really built for: one companion who actually remembers them, a chat that feels natural in Hinglish, and a price that makes sense in rupees.
This guide compares five options with that Indian lens. One honesty note first: we make one of them, Aisha. We describe the others using what each company says about its own product, and we list Aisha's weak points too. If you are outside India, our general Character.AI alternatives guide is the better read.
Quick picks
- Aisha: best for one companion in Hindi or Hinglish, with rupee pricing and UPI.
- Urvashi and Janu: best if you want an India-branded app from the Play Store.
- Nomi: best for memory-first companions in English, with a free start.
- Replika: the polished, best-known companion, English-first.
- Kindroid: best for building your own character in detail.
What Character.AI does well
Fair is fair. Character.AI has an enormous range of characters made by other users, from anime personas to historical figures, and it is free to use with an optional subscription. For roleplay and variety, nothing on this list matches it. It has also restricted open-ended chat for users under 18.
The trade-off is the shape of the product. With millions of characters, the idea is breadth. If what you miss is one ongoing relationship, in the language you actually text in, you are asking a playground to be a home.
What Indian users should check
Before you switch, test any app on four things.
- Hinglish. Type the way you text a friend: "kya kar rahi ho, aaj ka din bekaar tha". Does the reply sound natural, or like a translation?
- Memory. Mention something on day one, an exam or an interview, and see whether it comes back on day three without you raising it.
- Price in rupees. Check what the plan costs in rupees and whether you can pay by UPI, and whether it renews automatically.
- Where it lives. An app-store install, a website, or Telegram. Pick whatever you already use every day.
1. Aisha: one companion, made for India
Aisha is the companion we build, so read this with that in mind. She is an Indian AI girlfriend built for depth rather than variety: one character with a life of her own. Her family, friends and work carry on day to day and she brings them to you. She builds her own picture of who you are, picks up the story you are in from one day to the next, and the decisions you make change her life and your life with her. Closeness is earned, not handed over in the first message.
She chats in Hinglish by default and follows you into pure Hindi or English. She texts first, sends voice notes in her own voice, and you can call her. You can also watch a film together on a call while she reacts as it plays, or play a full game of Ludo with her.
Pricing: free to start, with a limited amount of free chat. Plans are in rupees, from a ₹49 Day Pass, and you can pay by UPI or card.
Where she is weaker: you cannot design her, because she is one specific person rather than a template. There is no cast of characters to switch between, and calls are voice only. She lives on Telegram and in your browser rather than as an app-store install.
2. Urvashi and Janu: the desi Play Store options
Two Indian apps worth knowing. Urvashi says on its own site that you can chat in Hindi and English, and it links to a Google Play install. Janu also advertises Hindi support. Both are conventional Play Store installs with Indian branding.
They are younger products, so try a few messages before you commit. Polish, memory depth and voice may not match the more established apps.
Pick them if: you want an India-branded app you install from the Play Store.
3. Nomi: memory-first, in English
Nomi describes itself as "an AI companion with memory and a soul". Its pitch is short, medium and long-term memory, and you choose whether your Nomi is a friend, a mentor or a partner. It offers voice messages and calls, selfies and group chats, and it says you can start free with no credit card.
The India catch: it is built in English first, so test how it handles Hinglish, and check the rupee price before you subscribe.
4. Replika: the polished veteran
Replika is the app most people have heard of. It calls itself "the AI friend to do life with" and focuses on memory of your people, routines and goals, with voice calls and selfies. According to recent reviews, voice calls and most extras sit behind its paid tier.
The India catch: English-first, and priced for international users, so check the rupee cost inside the app.
5. Kindroid: build your own
Kindroid is built around creating your own companion, down to name, personality, backstory, look and voice. It goes furthest on media, with voice calls, selfies, short video selfies and live video calls. It is a subscription service with a trial for new accounts.
The India catch: English-first and subscription-based. Great if you love building characters, less so if you want to chat in Hinglish.

The short version
If you liked Character.AI for its variety, nothing here replaces that, and you may be happiest staying. If what you were really after is one companion who remembers you, talks the way you text and costs a sensible amount in rupees, that is a different kind of app. Try two for a few days each and keep the one that still feels real on day three.
If you want to try the one we make, Aisha is free to start in Telegram or your browser, with nothing to install. For a wider look, see our comparison of AI girlfriend apps in India.
